The corona pandemic is a major challenge for all members of the University of Zurich.

Our latest UZH Journal features an in-depth interview with President Michael Schaepman and Deputy President Gabriele Siegert on the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. In this extraordinary situation, the most important concern for the university is to get courses to students in a way that enables them to complete the semester as normal.  “Whatever happens, we want to assure the compatibility of people’s studies,” emphasizes Michael Schaepman. And Gabriele Siegert points out that despite the limitations, teaching has hardly suffered.  “We can largely guarantee the quality of teaching,” says the Deputy President. You can find out how teaching might change in the long term and which other consequences the pandemic could have in our interview.

In this issue, you can also find out about:

  • The varied teaching and research in the Department of Geography, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
  • What Laura Beccarelli (co-president of V-ATP) and Hannah Schoch (co-president of VAUZ) have to say about the meaning, purpose and benefits of serving on university committees and commissions.
  • How journalist and broadcaster Klara Obermüller experienced the total academic freedom at university in the 1960s.
  • Why economist David Dorn is one of the most frequently cited researchers in his field.

As always, the printed Journal is in German, but select articles are available online in English. Don’t forget to check out the website: https://www.journal.uzh.ch/en.html
