In the heart of Zurich’s old town, on a 600-meter stretch between the lower lake and Zurich town hall, the boats of UZH and ETH went toe-to-toe in a best-of-three series in the men’s, women’s, professors’ and alumni categories. The conditions on Saturday were perfect, but with the slightest of currents, the excellent racing times achieved in the previous year could not quite be replicated. Nevertheless, the two universities’ athletes battled it out in very close races. The University of Zurich emerged victorious in the men’s and professors’ categories, while ETH Zurich won the races of the women and the alumni. All of the teams had clinched their victories after only two legs.
Last year, the first-ever race between 16-scull racing boats worldwide was marred by an incident – the POLY boat was damaged on its way to the starting line as a result of heavy swell and had to be reduced to 12. This year, however, the spectacle took place as planned, much to the delight of the many spectators, who witnessed the POLY boat’s win.
