In its meeting of 29 January 2018, the Board of the University approved a number of appointments.

Professorial appointments:

Prof. Dr. Carlos Alós-Ferrer, b. 1970, is appointed full professor ad personam of decision and neuroeconomic theory (NOMIS professorship) from 1 March 2018. Prof. Alós-Ferrer studied mathematics at the University of Valencia, Spain. He then obtained an MSc in quantitative economics from the University of Alicante, Spain, where he also earned his doctoral degree in 1998. After stints as assistant professor and associate professor at the University of Vienna, Austria, in 2005 he became professor of microeconomics at the University of Konstanz, Germany. Since 2012, Prof. Alós-Ferrer has been doing research and teaching as W3 professor of microeconomics in the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne, Germany.

Prof. Dr. Corinna Ulcigrai, b. 1980, is appointed full professor of pure mathematics from 1 August 2018. Prof. Ulcigrai studied mathematics at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy, and gained her PhD from Princeton University, USA, in 2007. She subsequently worked at the School of Mathematics of the University of Bristol, UK, as lecturer and research fellow, before taking up postdoctoral positions at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and at Princeton University. In 2013, Prof. Ulcigrai was appointed as reader in pure mathematics at the University of Bristol, where she has been conducting research and teaching as professor of pure mathematics since the summer of 2015.

Privatdozent Dr. Daniel Barthelmes, b. 1977, is appointed associate professor of ophthalmology from 1 August 2018. The professorship is associated with leading the Department of Ophthalmology at the UniversityHospital Zurich. On 31 January 2018, the hospital board appointed Dr. Daniel Barthelmes as head of clinic. Dr. Barthelmes studied medicine in Germany at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Technische Universität Dresden. He obtained his PhD in 2006 from the Department of Ophthalmology of the UniversityHospital Zurich. From 2009, Dr. Barthelmes was clinical honorary vitreo-retinal fellow and postgraduate research fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia, where he was also conferred a PhD. In 2012, he returned to Switzerland to take up the position of attending physician to the Department of Ophthalmology at the UniversityHospital Zurich, where he has served as chief of service and head of the retina team since 2015.

Privatdozent Dr. Michael C. Frank, b. 1974, is appointed associate professor of 19th and 20th-century English literature from 1 August 2018. Dr. Frank studied English and German at the University of Konstanz, Germany, with a year abroad at Trinity College Dublin, Republic of Ireland. He worked at the University of Konstanz from 2003, where he was also conferred his doctorate in 2005. After various interim professorships, Dr. Frank took up teaching positions at the University of Bern and the University of Basel in 2017. Since the fall of 2017, he has been interim professorial chair of English literature and general literary studies at the University of Konstanz.

  
Professorial promotion:

Prof. Dr. Ingrid Tomkowiak, b. 1956, is appointed full professor ad personam of popular literature and media with a concentration in children’s and young adult media from 1 February 2018. Prof. Tomkowiak has been working at UZH since 2012 as associate professor ad personam in the same field.


Further appointments:

Dr. Roger Rudolph, b. 1969, is appointed assistant professor of labor and employment law and instructor in private law from 1 February 2018. Dr. Rudolph is currently working at UZH as an external instructor.  

Dr. Christoph Basten, b. 1983, is appointed assistant professor of banking from 1 February 2018. Dr. Basten is currently working at UZH as a visiting professor of banking.
 

Leavers:

Prof. Dr. Peter Johannes Wild, associate professor of systems pathology, will leave UZH on 31 March 2018. We thank him for his service to the University, the students, and his field. Prof. Wild has taken up an offer from Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany.
