From mobility students, high school graduates, people in their first semester to graduates who already have a bachelor’s, students start their studies at UZH with a wide range of different prior knowledge and experience. The new course catalogue, which goes online today, is designed to help them. But the new platform will also be useful for those with more than one semester behind them.
Modules are displayed with the relevant ECTS credits and easy-to-read information on courses and venues. And there are useful help functions for those who need assistance. To help put together a timetable there’s a watchlist and a calendar view, with a PDF print function. Another important innovation is that the platform is multilanguage, and also available in English.
It took only a year for the team headed by Thomas Tschümperlin, Head of Services, and Thomas Schwan, Head of Teaching Projects at Information Technology, to design and deliver the platform. “To make sure the needs of users were taken into account from the outset we created a project team including students and staff in the deans’ offices. The new system has also been tested by high school students,” explains Thomas Tschümperlin.
The need for a new solution had arisen because the existing course catalogue was outmoded and prone to error. There were problems with new browsers, it wasn’t possible to display properly on tablets and mobile phones, and viewing lists was far from optimal. The new platform meets the latest requirements. Data are imported from an SAP database, and users get a clear view of all the study programs, modules, courses, and information on instructors.
The online course catalogue is part of a new student portal scheduled for completion at the end of 2016. In the future new applications will be added on an ongoing basis, giving personalized access to key web applications for students, such as semester enrollment and timetables.
